Match Report - Leeds Chiefs

Friday night hockey saw an all Yorkshire clash with the Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs taking on the Leeds Chiefs. Dmitri Zimozdra started in goal for the Dogs with Sam Gospel for the Chiefs.

After a tentative start the game built in to a pattern that generally saw the puck heading towards Gospel. After a number of half chances, the first quality opportunity involved Kieran Brown beating three Chiefs but then losing control at the last moment. Nathan Salem was looking lively and tested his former team mate in the Leeds goal. Brown had another near miss when Gospel just got enough on a shot before his D bailed him out. Cole Shudra was also denied from two feet out as the Dogs outshot the Chiefs by 17-2 but the period ended scoreless.

Into the middle session and the threat of Nathan Salem finally struck on the power play, a close range effort at 24:24. Leeds were back level a couple of minutes later; Barnes showing form and quality to score. The Dogs kept pressing and after Gospel had stopped Brown numerous different ways, Leeds broke back with Meidl setting up Barnes with the Dogs D spilt. Gospel continued to frustrate the Sheffield forwards and helped see his team into the break 2-1 up.

The pace got even quicker in the 3rd period and another charge from Salem saw him get his second of the night on a delayed penalty at 43:22. However once again Leeds scored soon after - Bobby Streetly finding time and space to fire home from the blue line. Zimozdra stopped them extending that lead on a 3 on 1 breakaway before the Chiefs got in to penalty trouble. Despite a lengthy 5 on 3 advantage they kept the Dogs out, no surprise that Sam Gospel was central to that success, supported by some determined defending. Having survived the penalties, Leeds had less than four minutes to hang on and even with Zimozdra pulled and the kitchen sink thrown at him, Gospel wasn’t to be beaten at Leeds claimed their second win of the season.

No one was surprised to see Gospel take the man of the match beers with the Matrix Frames sponsored Nathan Salem chosen for the Dogs.

The Steeldogs will be back at iceSheffield on Sunday, playing Brad Day and the Telford Tigers.

It’s a Halloween game, with prizes for the best child and the best adult in fancy dress. So get on your broom stick and lurch down to the rink for a 4:30 faceoff.
