Dogs and Pirates in 12 goal thriller

The Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs faced the Hull Pirates in the first meeting between the clubs of the season. A game which was going to be a goal fest, like so many in the new National Division.

Dmitri Zimozdra and Ash Smith were the starting net minders.

The game got off to a flyer, Cam Brownley didn’t give the crowd long to settle in their seats as he rippled the back of the net after 1:19, assisted Luka and Elliott. Then Jan Danecek added a second goal just one minute later, assisted Calvert. What a start for the Dogs! Bobby Chamberlain got the Pirates on the board on 2:35 and Jason Hewitt equalised another minute later. The pace didn’t falter and the shots still came in on both net minders. Nathan Salem was the next player to find the net whilst on a power play, assisted Luka and Morgan at 5:57. There was a whole 3 minutes before the next goal, which went to Peter Fabus. The Steeldogs and Pirates were trading shots and time in the opposing zone. As the period was winding down, Tim Smith was in the right place at the right time for the Steeldogs 4th goal, assisted Bell and Danecek. End of the first period 4-3

The second period belonged to the Pirates. They came out with energy and took the game to the Steeldogs. Shot after shot on Zimozdra, who deflected, covered and caught the puck time after time. He faced 22 shots in the second period alone! Hull scored their 4th goal on 26:30 through Jason Hewitt, Olegs Sislannikovs scored the 5th two minutes later and Josh Gent scored the 6th with a couple of minutes remaining. Sheffield didn’t get firing in the middle twenty. End of the second 4-6

This set the game up for a tense final twenty minutes, this time Sheffield got their shooting shoes on and although they had 15 shots on goal to Hull’s 5 shots, they couldn’t make the break through. With the clock beginning to beat the Dogs, Morgan took his time out and when the opportunity came, he got the extra skater out and it had an impact, Vladimir Luka slotted home from Brown and Smith. The Dogs had pulled a goal back 5-6. They had to go for it again, when the zone had been cleared Zimozdra went to the bench but the Dogs lost the puck, Hewitt took a skate towards goal and didn’t miss the empty netter on 59:49.

End of the game: Sheffield Steeldogs 5-7 Hull Pirates

Man of the match awards were presented to Olegs Sislannikovs for the Pirates and Cam Brownley, sponsored by Infinity Laser Clinic.

We are back at iceSheffield later today, The Raiders are making a return to Sheffield after several years away from the rink. Make sure you’re there to support the Steeldogs in what promises to be another game full of goals, goals and more goals.
